The minimum wage in the Philippines is ranging from PHP 316 – PHP 537 depending on the region. With this income, many families have difficulty saving for emergencies. Additionally, thousands of Filipinos do not have enough financial education. When death comes to the family, they might not have enough money to pay for the funeral.

Here’s an estimated breakdown of a funeral cost in the Philippines:

Legal documents (including death certificate, burial permit, etc.) – PHP 1, 000

Memorial service (including casket, memorial chapel, flowers, embalming, hearse, deceased body pick up, etc.) – min. PHP 50, 000

Memorial lot (apartment tombs at a public cemetery) – PHP 1, 000/year

Miscellaneous (refreshments, prayer services, requiem mass, transportation, etc.) – PHP 5, 000

Approximately, you need PHP 57, 000 to have a funeral service in the Philippines. But what if you can’t afford it? It is totally alright to ask for help from relatives and friends. You may also ask for financial assistance from some government agencies.

What If You Can’t Afford A Funeral

Here are the government agencies that provide burial assistance:

Social Security System (SSS) – Depending on the member’s paid contribution and average salary credit, you can get a minimum of PHP 20, 000 – a maximum of PHP 40, 000.

Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) – Active members, retirees, pensioners, or members who have been separated from service, but are entitled to future benefits, can receive PHP 30, 000 burial benefits.

Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) – A maximum of PHP 5,000 financial assistance will be given to an indigent family or a maximum of PHP 20, 000 which will be determined by a social worker.

Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) – The next of kin or whoever paid the burial expenses, will receive a maximum of PHP 20, 000 from the agency.

Local government offices – You might want to check your local government if they provide burial assistance.

While these government agencies provide financial assistance for your deceased loved one’s funeral, it is wise to invest in a pre-need life plan to lessen your funeral expenses. For only PHP 540 per month or PHP 18 per day, you are freeing your family from financial burden when life’s eventualities happen.
