“Grief is not a disorder, a disease or a sign of weakness. It is an emotional, physical and spiritual necessity, the price you pay for love. The only cure for grief is to grieve.” Earl Grollman

It is okay to feel sad when we lose someone dear to us. Grieving is a normal reaction after losing a loved one. There is no perfect formula to get through grief nor a timeline. Take your time and allow yourself to heal.

5 Things You Can Do To Help You Heal From A Loss

Here are the five things you can do to help you heal from a loss:

  1. Don’t be in a hurry: Take the time you need to the healing process. There is no deadline. Allow yourself to feel the pain of losing someone and mourn. Let time be your healer.
  2. Be with your people: As much as you want to be alone, resist it. Know that there are people who care so much about you. Give them the chance to help you get through this difficult time. They may have experienced what you are going through right now and could help you. Let their love embrace and comfort you.
  3. Take care of yourself: Go out, exercise, eat healthily and sleep. Study shows that nature can help reduce sadness and depression. Take a walk in the woods or at the beach. Breathe fresh air.
  4. Continue doing what you enjoy: Your life doesn’t end when you lose someone. It is probably difficult to start all over again. For some, listening to music or playing a musical instrument helps. If you like riding a bike or cooking, by all means, do it!
  5. Get help: Feeling sad is okay. That is completely normal after a loss. But if you think you can no longer function and has difficulty coping with your grief, talk to your friends, family or get professional help.

While funeral service allows you to grasp reality, it also gives you the time to be with your inner circle. After the funeral may be the toughest, know that you have your friends and family. You are not alone. Take time off from work to allow yourself to heal. Meditate if you can. Partake in activities that you enjoy and make you feel alive.
